Jonathan Stroud was born in Bedford and grew up in St Albans. He studied at York University. He has a strong background in children's books. While writing his earlier novels, Buried Fire, The Leap and The Last Siege, he worked as an editor at Walker Books, editing a number of game books and non-fiction titles. During the 1990s he started publishing his own works and quickly gained success.
Among his most prominent works is the best-selling Bartimaeus Trilogy. One of the features of these novels compared to others of their genre is that Stroud examines the stereotypes and ethics of the magician class and the enslaved demons. This is done by telling the story from the perspective of the sarcastic and slightly egomaniacal djinni Bartimaeus.
His latest books are the Lockwood & Co Series which are set in London. There is an epidemic of ghosts in Britain. Their touch brings death, and only children have the power to fight them. A number of Psychic Investigations Agencies have sprung up to destroy the dangerous apparitions. Lucy Carlyle, a talented young agent, arrives in London hoping for a notable career. Instead she finds herself joining the smallest most ramshackle agency in the city, run by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood. When one of their cases goes horribly wrong, Lockwood & Co. have one last chance of redemption. Unfortunately this involves spending the night in one of the most haunted houses in England, and trying to escape alive. So starts the story of the first book The Screaming Staircase.
Recently the Sunday Times has put together a list of its favourite ‘100 Modern Children’s Classics’ (chosen from the past 10 years) and it’s thrilling to see Jonathan’s stand-alone 2009 novel, Heroes of the Valley, has made the selection.
We are extremely lucky to have this world renowned author visiting Oundle so don’t miss your chance to come and meet him!
