After years of teaching English to secondary school students, Emma now writes full time. She graduated with distinction from Bath Spa University’s MA in Writing for Young People.

Frost Hollow Hall won The North East Book Award 2013. It was longlisted for the Brandford Boase Award 2014 and shortlisted for the BASH award 2015. It was a Pick of the Year for Red House Books.

The Girl Who Walked on Air was nominated for the 2015 Carnegie Medal and was on the Guardian's list of Top Kids Books for 2014. She has also written In Darkling Wood, (The Bookseller's Book of The Month for July 2015), and the Christmas novella The Snow Sister (The Times Childrens Book of the Week)

Emma’s latest book and Julia Eccleshare's Book of the Month July 2016, Strange Star is a cleverly told story-within-a story that draws together true stories with an original adventure. Italy, 1816, Felix works as a servant to the Lord Byron and soon finds himself intrigued by the exciting and dangerous ideas of Lord Byron’s friends and visitors, the Shelleys. During an evening devoted to the telling of ghost stories, Mary Shelley brings a young girl to life despite her seeming dead on her unexpected arrival.
